Every week, we collect and feature the outstanding submissions to our gallery. If you're looking for quality literature to read, start here!

Each item is hand-picked by our admins and presented with a small introduction (we think this makes browsing literature easier). We don't seek perfection: we just choose interesting work and share it for critique, appreciation and encouragement.

May has crept upon us slowly this year, but as usual our dedicated members are hard at work producing lots of stories and poems for you to enjoy.  To kick things off we have a collection of heartfelt and emotional pieces, from the tough reality of Frederick and his grandmother's life with Alzheimer's, through the dream-scape of the African savannah, to a bridge where a faithful lover waits for the unknown.  As a bonus, there's also a little article about copyright!

The Hymns of Granny Madeline by Inkfish7

Frederick is his grandmother's caregiver, every night he bathes her to the sound of her favourite hymn, a hymn she remembers the tune and words to even if she doesn't remember him.

A moving story about Alzheimer's and the reality of living with the disease and the tough choices it forces upon loved ones.
Inkfish7 manages to inject enough realistic emotion into this short story to make it memorable in more ways than one. Not only is it centered around Madeline and her condition, but on a more intimate note it's more about Frederick and his connections with the same hymn his grandmother remembers above all else.

Lion Heart by Concora

"There is a tempest inside of her, and her golden lion's mane is thinning."

A beautiful piece which conjures up a wash of golds and sleeping ancient giants. Concora does a great job with the contrasts of the dream-like fantasy world and the subtly bleak reality hinted at throughout this short story. It is truly a story about escape and to some extent acceptance of fate.

Adamantine Valentine by Vellaroque

An unlikely lover waits at the bridge - faithful to a fault, awaiting with baited breath to see who emerges from the shadows.

This gorgeous poem paints a classic love story. A pampered princess summons her lover, filled equally with love as with doubt. And her chosen pauper disguises himself in order to make the secret rendez-vous. The poem finds him at the bridge, "Between slumbering water and lunar radiance", awaiting his destiny. As with any poem worth its salt, this piece offers more and more with each successive read-through.

Tip of the Week!

Copyright: A Rundown by linaket

A quick little guide with the facts on Copyright and what it could mean to you as a writer.

A lot of people don't know the real details about copyrighting their work and often just thinking about it can be a little daunting.  linaket has put together a useful "mini-guide" about it all with some useful tips for those who want to find out more about protecting their work.  Not only does this guide provide examples on the format of copyrighting in printed documents, but it also clears up how you can copyright your own work right here on the internet.
