Every week, we collect and feature the outstanding submissions to our gallery. If you're looking for quality literature to read, start here!

Each item is hand-picked by our admins and presented with a small introduction (we think this makes browsing literature easier). We don't seek perfection: we just choose interesting work and share it for critique, appreciation and encouragement.

We've got a double-dose of robots (or at least, robot-like things!) to present to you this week, in a Round-up which has lot to say about human nature. We've got some big announcements for the chat room, too, with new dates for both the Write Off and its spiritual parent, Word Wars!

This Week's Highlights

A State of Misery by SomethingOnceSacred

The very first prototype synthetic human leads a pretty bleak life; discarded by his maker in favour of more refined creations. Of all the indignities has been forced to bear at his maker's hands, perhaps the most keenly felt is the selection of his name: Misery.

A thought-proking piece of science fiction literature, exploring the concept of synthetic human creation. Misery is a compelling character and the world he lives in, along with his fellow "creations", is intriguing. As with most sci-fi devoted to artificial life, the appeal of the piece lies not within the sythetics themselves, but in what they reveal about the nature of humanity.

The Perversity of We by xlntwtch

An exploration of the uncanny bond between twins.

Many of us hear about the sometimes spooky relationship between twins - but very few of us get to feel such a thing. In this poem, delivered with an exhilerating rhythm, xlntwtch helps to show us what it feels like, while also speculating on the extent to the bond. It's honest and candid poetry which asks the questions we so often deny ourselves.

Game by Coramyrth

With each roll of the dice, the defeated human race shrinks ever smaller.

We have a feeling this piece will divide opinion - but we also think that this is a genuinely unique piece of literature. Using a broken stream-of-conciousness narrative, it tells of the desperate last days of a post-apocolyse humanity. This is story-telling at its most sparse, and we think it's a hit.

Ballad of the American Waitress by TheGlassIris

Cigarettes
And questions,
Punctuate my hair at, maybe five o' clock in the morning.

We love a good story about a working-class hero, so we were bound to feature this poem eventually! This piece sings of the dreams and tribulations of a lonely waitress; of waking up from the American dream.

The July Write Off
