How much "voice" do you think that fans have when it comes to influencing the choices an author has over their story/characters/world?

I don't know how else to ask this
Eg. when an author chooses to "kill off" a popular character and fans then send hate mail or abuse - pressuring them to change it
Or when fans "hate" an author for making certain choices with regards to their own creation
Do you believe this is fair?
And at what point does an author's right to own their world end and the right of the fans begin?

On the one hand, I want to argue for complete autonomy on the part of the artist. On the other, the fans make them successful; there is a give-and-take relationship here and it's not fair of the artist to write off the people supporting what they do. I love seeing creators with an interactive relationship with fans - the teams behind shows like My Little Pony come readily to mind. (Love or hate that show, they have a phenomenal relationship with the fanbase.)
